The Resurrection of the Mind

Luke 24:36-49

“The Gospel message doesn’t end with the cross but with the resurrection.”

What is the best method to motivate individuals for Kingdom work? Bribery, flattery, motivational literature or speakers and positive thinking only go so far. When things get difficult, this kind of external motivation will fail. In order to develop an active conviction that will motivate ministry, three things must happen. 1.) They must see it as important. People might be willing to do insignificant things as a job for money, but they will not serve as a volunteer unless they really believe in the cause. 2.) They must see it as right and good; in other words, you must present a morally persuasive argument. 3.) They must see it as doable—that they have the time, skills and ability to do what you are asking them to do.

In our text, Jesus is seeking to resurrect the mind of His disciples. They have bits and pieces of the resurrection story from various ones who have seen Him since He rose from the dead, but they aren’t convinced yet and don’t get it. Jesus appeared to them, provided physical evidence, reasoned with them, and opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. He knew that they needed to be convinced for themselves of His resurrection in order for it to change their lives and for them to have the conviction necessary to evangelize the world.

Conviction of the actual, physical resurrection of Jesus Christ brings peace because it proves that His message is true. The Gospel heals us because He took our sin, grief and shame to the cross for us. Christ’s resurrection should instill great confidence in us because it proves that Jesus is winning and that He cannot be stopped. The power that raised Christ from the dead is the power that changes lives! Finally, belief in the resurrection of Jesus should empower us to speak the truth. Because we are convinced that Christ’s resurrection it is true, we may boldly proclaim that the Scripture commands all people to repent.

The Gospel changes lives. Has it changed yours? Has the resurrection of Jesus Christ become a life-altering conviction for you?
