Fall Quarter Adult Sunday School Classes
September-November
Young Couples Class
Each for the Other - Marriage as It's Meant to Be
This class is designed particularly for couples in their 20s and 30s, but all couples are welcome to join. This quarter the class will study “Each for the Other: Marriage As It’s Meant to Be”, by Dr. Bryan Chapell, president of Covenant Seminary. Building a strong marriage is tough, yet the Bible is packed with principles on nurturing an intimate, rewarding relationship. Marriage as it was created to be means understanding God’s plan for unconditional love. These principles, and the overarching theme of living sacrificially in marriage, are explored by Dr. Chapell. Bob Clark will teach.
College Age Class
This quarter the class will be taught by Elder Dan Neilsen. The focus will be on making Godly Decisions.
Agape Class
This quarter the class will focus on “The New Testament Community” and will study a variety of passages dealing with the corporate life of God’s people. Emphasis will be upon the birth of the community of God’s people, its development and work, and the “growing pains” God’s people faced, as recorded in the New Testament epistles. This quarter the class will utilize materials from the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Ron Gates, Mark Inouye, and Gene Striker share teaching responsibilities.
Mary Jane Clark Women’s Class
The quarter’s study is entitled “Love and Truth: A Study of I, II and III John.” In these epistles, John deals with such topics as the Christian’s standard, marks of genuine saving faith, how to detect false teachers, relationships in the church, arid the believer’s assurance of salvation. This class utilizes materials from Scripture Press and is taught by Nell Overton.
Clarence Clark Men’s Class
This quarter’s study is entitled “The New Testament Community” and will focus on portions of Matthew, Acts and selected passages from New Testament Epistles. Units are entitled, “The Birth of a New Community,” “Living as a New Community,” and “The New Community Grows.” This class utilizes materials from the Union Gospel Press and is taught by Randy Waters.
Finding the Lost: The Meaning of Jesus’ Parables
The parables of Jesus are counted as the greatest teaching known to mankind. But how then can it be that 10 different preachers could preach 10 different messages on the same parable? Focusing primarily on the parables in Luke, this class will explore the meaning of Jesus’ parables in their original setting by asking the following questions: what would this teaching mean to a middle eastern peasant in Jesus’ audience? What, then, was He originally trying to teach? What cultural notes of His day did the teaching play upon? And, finally, how does that teaching translate to us, the church and the world today? Along with introducing interpretive strategies all can use when reading the parables, we will explore the great triad of the Luke 15 parables (the Lost Coin, the Lost Sheep and the Prodigal Son) in depth (5-6 weeks), plus an additional 6 or 7 other parables in Luke. The teacher is Ruling Elder Bob Lowe.
